As designers prepared for their fashion shows in the tents at Bryant Park, Fashion Week models were being fitted and prepped, and fans waiting eagerly in the lobby and in their white covered chairs....the social media world became a whirlwind whipping through the tents.

New York Fashion Week had barely begun as the storm ravaged at about 9am NY time, right as the BCBGMAXAZRIA show was to start. Blackberrys lit up telling us news that a brilliant light in the fashion world just went out.  "McQueen, committed suicide".

McQueen has always gone against the tide, injecting his shows with theatrics and sometimes a bit of shock that horrified many.  His artistic genius was most recently enjoyed and talked about after sending models down the runway in armadillo and alien inspired shoes.  Several of the models flat out refused to wear the towering heels for fear of breaking an ankle.  The snake-like designs and patterns equally repulsed me and amazed me.  Definitely left me wanting more.  The recent designs he made for Lady Gaga are now pictured everywhere.

Born Lee Alexander McQueen, he didn't quite fit in to the "norm" even at a young age as he began drawing women's clothing.  He was said to have been a brilliant tailor at such a young age that when a shortage of expert tailors became evident, he walked into a shop and was given the job on the spot.

Many people do not understand what a loss this is to the world of fashion and art.  They have not seen the talent of a boy who, as an adult, was thrown into fame but didn't lose touch with what was important.  If one had seen his artful creations, one would understand why so many feel they have lost their inspiration.

Of course the question from many..."why?"  Had he still been reeling over his tremendous loss of friend, Isabella Blow, who committed suicide in May 2007?  Most didn't also realize that his mother died just days ago.  His death on the eve of his mother's funeral is tragic.

The pressure of creating a line so spectacular, and a show to top the last, is immeasurable.  Put that atop the loss of a mother just days before you are to debut in front of the critical fashion world....it's incomprehensible.

The McQ line was to be shown today but was cancelled as his family, friends and McQueen crew dealt with the shocking news.  Also coming up was the much anticipated McQueen show in Paris.  Questions swirl about that and the future of the brand.

Said to have hanged himself, McQueen was obviously troubled more than anyone knew.  Celebrities, friends and complete strangers mourn him.  Flowers adorn the sidewalks in front of his stores.

One of my hopes was to seen a McQueen show someday.  I was giddy as a schoolgirl the day I purchased a McQueen dress.  I hope the brand continues on be it won't be the same without the wizard pulling the strings.

Rest in Peace, Lee Alexander McQueen.
