Nail color trends at the Emmy’s

One interesting detail I noted while scanning all our Emmy photos, is the high number of ladies wearing dark nail polish.  I’m often asked “which is the trend, neutrals or darks”. I say, either as long as you do it well.

Personally I don’t like matching finger/toe nails.  Neutral on one, color on the other, unless neutral on both.

See how the celebs wore their colors coordinating to their Emmy frocks:

I’m not entirely sure what to say about many of the dresses worn last night at the Emmy awards.  In my humble opinion there were more bad dresses than good.  Apparently only 1/2 of the ladies got the memo that it was a Roman theme. ;)   Others made me wonder if they just forgot which award celebration they were attending.

Edie Falco – Bottega Veneta.  Many gave Falco rave reviews on this dress.  Standing, it did her no justice.  I hated the waist-line.  Walking across the stage however made the dress look quite lovely.

Sofia Vegara – Carolina Herrera.  Great dress, a bit matchy-matchy on the accessories.  Still, bravo for the beautiful silhouette.  And how ’bout that fabulous hair?

January Jones (in blue) - Versace.  What the??????  MTV awards perhaps?  Wrong show doll.  Madonna may have loved that bodice with the cone-shaped breasts though.  It’s too bad…she’s lovely and could have really rocked a great gown worthy of the Emmy’s.

Claire Danes - Giorgio Armani Prive.  I think Claire looks stunning in this gown shimmering with Swarovski drop crystals and sequins, even if it reminded me a tiny bit of Cameron’s Oscar dress.   While not in the bold color category, the nudes are definitely fabulous if you can rock it like Claire.

Lea Michele – Oscar de la Renta.  Another gown that I loved.  A dress like this could swallow such a tiny frame, but this gal made it work.  The fit is so fabulous plus the mermaid like back…delish.  A bit overboard on the gems…but will forgive her.

Sarah Hyland was not praised much for this choice but I thought it looked stunning.  The way the fabric drapes her frame it seems made just for her.  Unlike some whose dressed looked forced on their bodies (see Julia below).

My absolute top, for the worst: Lauren Graham.  I just don’t get it.  Not sure what the goal was here, but it was definitely out of bounds.

One more category we had to add because while we adore this woman and her handsome hubby, is the WHAT THE? category.  Because we have no idea what Rita was thinking when she put on this hot mess.  Individually the dress or the shoes are fab…together…eek.

Are Rihanna’s ROCKSTAR boots for you?

Select Saks Fifth Avenue locations will be carrying the silver Stuart Weitzman ROCKSTAR thigh-high boot that Rihanna wore on her most recent tour. Adorned with over 22,000 Swarovski clear crystal stones in varying sizes, this boot is Stuart Weitzman’s unique take on the fashion footwear silhouette and hot trend, the thigh-high boot. Each stone was set by hand, which took over 200 hours of labor. At $10,000 a pair, these boots are not just a piece of fashion…they’re a work of art!

Personally I’d go for the black ones Rihanna wore because I don’t have any go-go dancing planned in order to wear the white.  I hope they are comfortable with a price tag like that ;)

Budgeting for Beauty

beauty budgetIt’s the greatest concept to hit the Midwest since the storm shelter.

Beauty is one thing we gals won’t give up completely.  We will find ways to afford the cosmetics we need, the services we want.  Now there is a new way to look at that and plan for it.

Just guesstimate what you spend throughout a year…add it all up.  How much did you come up with?  $150, 400, $850?  Yikes…throw in some hair cuts, laser hair removal and the Botox and I’m easily close to 4 digits and that’s nothing compared to what I would WANT to spend.  Scary eh?  However, if you divide that total number by 12 months, it seems a lot less daunting.

But still,” you cry “there is no way I can set aside that amount each month and not spend it the next time I pass a fabulous dress in the window!”

Never fear my beaut…the Beauty Budget Card is here.  First up: Kansas City and spreading to other Midwest cities as I type.

The cost:  NOTHING for a card holder!

The benefit: you end up having the money set aside and available when you realize you have a reunion in two weeks and your roots look like a skunk stripe and your pocket book is empty.

How:  just sign up for the card at www.beautybudgetcard.com to get started.  Tell them how much you want to save each month and they will pull it out of your account and put it on your gift card balance.  Use it when you need it.

AND…there will be bonus rewards coming plus some exclusive deals just for being a Beauty Budget Card holder and using one of their clients for your beauty services.

Really…I think it’s genius and kick my self on a daily basis (which is utterly painful with 5″ heels) that I didn’t think of this idea myself!!  Get the card, set up your easy plan and you’re on your way to freshly cut and colored hair, a relaxed back and maybe even hair free legs!

BONUS!!!!  for reading this far….sign up for the card by Wednesday, Aug. 18th at 5pm and you can have a free ticket to the Oct 7th Haute Market event!  Just let Beauty Budget Card know that Haute Weekly sent you.  They will let us know so we can send your ticket as soon as they are available.

60 seconds to gorgeous..

In our beauty fantasies, we all have glam squads to help us get as perfectly gorgeous as Kim Catrall, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel. But in reality, we simply don’t have the time to sit in chair after chair primping and prepping. We rounded up some simple beauty tricks from the pros to take you from drab to fab in less than a minute each. So go ahead, hit the snooze button and get ready to take your getting-gorgeous routine down to next-to-nothing.

Fresh Faced
An SPF-packed tinted moisturizer can treat, protect and smooth skin simultaneously. Look for formulas with light reflectors; the tiny shimmering particles can get you glowing in no time. For the quickest finish — and easiest absorption — apply with fingers.

Frizz-free
To smooth the cuticle and impart shine on unmanageable locks, opt for the smallest application of a body moisturizer — yes, you read right — to your mane. Dab a dollop in between hands and run palms from root to tip, suggests celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin, whose fans include everyone from Veronica Webb to Mandy Moore. Look for silicone-based products, which amp up shine.

Lemon Aid
When life gives you lemons, use them to lose weight and enhance your hands. For a morning drink to help reduce bloat, squeeze a lemon into a glass of hot water. Rub the rind on nails for a brightening effect.
